To Launch a New Year — 28 December 2022 – 4 January 2023

Astrological year-end review

It is a December custom to review the year. In joining the tradition, I will take the planets one by one, staring with Pluto and working back down toward the earth.

Pluto was in the third decant of Capricorn, the cardinal-earth sign, for the entire year of 2022. Pluto transited 27 deg Capricorn twice this year, its position in the US natal chart, when the USA declared itself an independent nation in the year 1776.  Thus, the Pluto return represents the regeneration of the US as a leader of the western world. During this year, the institution of democracy as a system of government was tested. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February at the time of the first transit, the second occurred early in December and lasts the first weeks in January. A final passage of Pluto over the natal degree of 27 Capricorn occurs September – October 2023. While some astrologers were predicting the demise of the US as a democracy for this Pluto transit, the predictions of doom were not fulfilled, as democracy has proved resilient. There are adjustments that are necessary, and amendments could be made during the final phase of the return, presenting an opportunity for a rebirth. A conflict that has been brewing for several years became a major invasion when Russian forces attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Our purpose on earth is to evolve personally and collectively. Nature tends toward homeostasis, an equilibrium of opposing forces in a closed system. It is essential to understand natural forces to balance the natural outcome with the continued depletion resources. Putin’s war has no purpose other than the will to power. The waste of human life and natural resources is rampant in this war. Pluto in Capricorn, when in its negative role, has the will to absolute power. The arc of history has been diverted, in this corrupt will to power, pushing aside at this critical time,  issues of climate change, sustainable energy use, and economic inequalities, which are only increasing to a super-critical phase as a result.

Neptune in Pisces points to difficult, intractable conditions. As participants in the universal system, the eco-system as well as the arc of history, we have responsibilities to lend weight to the positive actions that are motivated by positive values to benefit our own lives, as well as those of our neighbors and the future of humanity. Pisces represents a psychological struggle between the positive and negative forces, between life and death, the unconscious struggle to evolve. Neptune represents a force that disassociates, dissolves, and expands endlessly. So, its sojourn in Pisces from Feb 2012 to the present, and continuing for another 2 years, until April 2025, represents the collective effort to combat the negative forces of death and destruction, war and disease, poverty and psychosis.

Uranus stayed within the sign Taurus for all of 2022 transiting only from 10 to 18 degrees of Taurus. Nature’s forces are most directly indicated by the fixed-earth sign. Uranus is the power of revolutionary change, and eventual transformation. Climate became a powerful factor this year. The economy, as the practical medium of exchange, experienced upheavals. Technical innovations, crypto currencies, social media platforms experienced revolutionary jolts. More to come in the next two and a half years that Uranus remains in Taurus.

Saturn transited in Aquarius for the entire year of 2022, from 12th to 23rd degree, staying primarily in the second decant, thus in the fixed-air sign in the center of the sign, evidencing a fixed modality. As the ruler of Capricorn and disposted by Uranus, Saturn played a pivotal role in contributing to stability. Saturn represents the energy, the emanation, as it were, of structure and conformity, amid rapid change. Aquarius as the sign of universal brotherhood, is closely related to democratic principles. Democracy prevailed in the US, in Europe, and is struggling against oppression in Ukraine.

Jupiter transited through the sign of Pisces for all of 2022, and in the final days of the year, made its ingress to Aries.  Jupiter is the emanation of expansion and the principle of integration. The issues raised were augmented by Jupiter’s transit and efforts to resolve forces of human migration, energy consumption and other humanitarian issues gained priority. In Aries, individualization of the power of expansion and integration will become more pronounced, perhaps as heroes and villains.

Mars transited through half the zodiac, from Sagittarius to Gemini. Personal initiatives are represented by Mars, and in the universal signs of Sadge through Pisces, the focus was on individuals who represented political factions in the court system, national interests in leadership roles, humanitarian efforts, and in Aries and Taurus economic winners and losers. Currently, literary favorites emerge.

The interior planets, Mercury, and Venus and the luminaries, play roles in relationships to the outer planets by transit aspects, throughout the year.

Chiron, the centaur, transited from 8 deg Aries to 16 Aries, then went retrograde in July, returning direct motion on December 24th, finishing the year at 11 deg Aries. Individuals played a role in offering advice, wisdom gained through personal wounds. The popularity of media such as Quora, where individuals share personal experiences to a wide readership, is an example.

Ceres, a dwarf planet, transited from 28 deg Taurus to 2 deg Libra, as the Millennials and Gen X gain greater access to political and economic roles, advocating from green energy and assuming a greater participation in decision making, influencing economic reform, dominating social media platforms world-wide.

2023

Sunday January 1st — The Moon in Taurus is trine aspect to the Sun in Capricorn, as favorable, practical solutions to the crisis of two days ago evolve. A new calendar year presents an opportunity to refresh the view of the future. Resolutions are made to address personal issues, however, avoid imposing a difficult vow. Promise good things for the future. The Moon makes a conjunction aspect to Uranus and Mercury retro in Capricorn, and approaches the sextile aspect to Neptune in Pisces, semi-sextile to Saturn in Aquarius. Over-eating or over-drinking could cause poor digestion and embarrassing illness. Resolutions to reform were short-lived.

Monday January 2nd — The Moon in Taurus is trine aspect to Mercury retro in Capricorn, encouraging ease of expression both of enjoyment and of discontent, the trine aspect to Pluto and Venus, as Venus exits Cap for the air sign Aquarius. Venus in Aquarius is less demanding of perfection in beauty, opting for expression in a futuristic mode. Neptune in a sextile aspect to Mercury retro in Cap works to dissolve past objections.   The Sun in Cap is square aspect to Chiron in Aries, as decisions reject better judgement in seeking a new direction. The Moon ingress to Gemini and sextile to Jupiter in Aries and trine aspect to Venus in Aquarius, favors creativity and good fortune.

Tuesday January 3rd — The Moon in Gemini reaches the conjunction aspect to Mars retro in Gemini, as plans are discussed, and re-arrangements considered. Mars slows to stationary position as it will return to direct transit by January 13th. Discussions continue about possible changes in planned events. It is advisable not to finalize or sign agreements with Mercury retro until the 19th of January.  For a better agreement with a trine aspect to Venus. The Moon is void-of -course this afternoon – US time zones until 9:45 PM EST, another indication of unsustainability of agreements made during the hours of void-of-course.
